How do prepaid funeral plans work?

With today’s funerals costing an average of £5,000 to £8,000 for a basic ceremony and with costs rising up to 5% each year, ensuring you get the ceremony you want without passing the costs on to your family is becoming more and more important.

Prepaid funerals allow you to pay for your funeral costs well in advance, saving your loved ones a lot of stress and financial burden, while taking advantage of the current prices.

Being able to plan out the costs also helps you plan the ceremony with your family, ensuring the prepaid funeral costs are covered properly before the day arrives, whenever it may be.

Why are prepaid funeral plans a good idea?

You’ll avoid the annual rise in funeral costs

With each passing year, funeral costs are rising 16 times faster than the rate of inflation. If this increase continues at the current rate, your family could be facing extremely expensive funeral costs in the future. Prepaid funeral plans allow you to lock the cost of your funeral to today’s current prices, completely avoiding the problem of these increasing costs.

You’ll remove the financial pressure on your loved ones

Unexpected funerals can lead to a lot of financial pressure on your loved ones should the worst happen.

Prepaid funeral plans allow you to cover any costs in advance, taking the financial burden off of your family’s shoulders and allowing them to focus on the ceremony instead.

You’re able to plan your funeral in advance

With funerals being a taboo subject, many families end up struggling to plan a ceremony, due to them not knowing the exact wishes of the deceased. Prepaid funeral plans allow you to outline what sort of ceremony you want, removing this pressure from your loved ones and ensuring you receive the right service.

What happens if funeral costs have risen by the time of the ceremony?

Your funeral cost will be agreed based on today’s prices, ensuring no unexpected cost falls to your loved ones.

Life insurance or prepaid funeral plans?

While life insurance is still the go-to choice for many, the annual increase in funeral costs has started to overtake the money paid out by insurance companies.

This means the rest of the cost must be covered by your estate or by your loved ones. You can also easily end up paying more in insurance premiums than the price of the ceremony over the course of the contract.

Thanks to the ability to lock into today’s current prices, prepaid funeral plans make it much easier to know exactly what you’ve paid for without having to worry about whether your life insurance payout will cover the full cost.

How much does a prepaid funeral plan cost?

Average prepaid funeral plans will cost from £3,000 to £5,000 and payment can be spread out over time.

Depending on the plan you’ve chosen and any extras you want to include in the ceremony, prepaid funeral plans regularly end up the most cost-effective way of getting the ceremony you want for the best price.
